IT IS YOUR DECISION AND IT MAY AFFECT YOUR QUALITY OF LIFE

Article by Bob Lemon

You must focus on your health and the health of your family and loved ones. It is your individual responsibility to take action. No one else is going to do it for you. It is your decision, and it may affect your overall quality of life. How do you want to spend your later years? Enjoying life to its fullest?

How and what you eat, whether you supplement your diet and how you choose to do so, is a major factor as well as your commitment to enjoyable exercise and to personal awareness activities of your choice like meditation, relaxation, prayer, yoga or other activities also affect it.

Macronutrients that provide our caloric energy (fats, carbohydrates and proteins) are readily available in most all our foods. As a matter of fact, we usually consume too many of them as evidenced by the fact that approximately 50% of the U.S. population is overweight. Most people understand the importance of vitamins and minerals.

Yet, we hear so much today about phytonutrients or sometimes called micronutrients, those valuable substances found in those fruits and vegetables we are supposed to eat, that it almost seems like a broken record to hear it again.

However, it is important that we understand that we must have them to be healthy. There are thousands of different phytonutrients and they are involved in the thousands of metabolic processes in our bodies.

Some phytonutrients are categorized as enzymes, enzyme activators, inhibitors or even coenzymes. Others are classified as phytosterols or one of many important metabolites. One thing for sure, they are synergistic with, and supportive of many of the known essential vitamins and other nutrients in your body. All categories are important, but to me the most exciting and most important is the category known as antioxidants.

Many people just do not consume all the basic nutrients they need to stay healthy as demonstrated by the following examples: In the United States, a National Institutes of Health survey showed that over 140 million Americans (77% of the adult population) did not eat the minimum daily amounts of fruits and vegetables.

The Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey indicated that 25% of women and 33% of men consumed less than 2.5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Twenty-five percent of the 9 and 10-year-old girls had Vitamin C intake below the Daily Allowances for their age and 20% to 30% of adults ingested less than the Daily Allowance of Vitamin C.

According to the USDA, nearly 9 out of 10 teenage girls and 7 out of 10 teenage boys do not receive enough calcium.
