Antioxidants are substances, including vitamins, minerals, certain phytonutrients and certain chemicals, that naturally protect key cellular components by neutralizing the harmful effects of free radicals on your cells. Antioxidants that occur naturally in the body or are consumed in the diet and from supplementation may neutralize a large amount of the free radical attack. Antioxidant protection is very important to your overall health.
Antioxidants help control free-radical attack by scavenging up free radicals. But according to Barry Halliwell, Doctor Sc., of the University of London and the University of California at Davis, speaking at a symposium sponsored by the International Life Sciences Institute, "Antioxidants help the body protect critical structural and functional proteins, including DNA and lipids throughout the whole body."
One primary area of interest is the antioxidant protection provided to collagen, the most prevalent structural protein in your body. Antioxidants are important to support the cartilage in your joints and skin thickness and elasticity as well as the elasticity, and strength in your arteries, bones and muscles.
ANTIOXIDANT SUPPLEMENTS ARE BENEFICIAL
Among the most widely publicized trials on antioxidants was a five-year study involving approximately 30,000 residents of north-central China. Participants were given either a placebo or a dietary supplement containing one of seven vitamin-mineral combinations.
Persons who received a daily dose of beta carotene, vitamin E and selenium were the most successful in staying healthy. Although many questions remain as to the significance of these findings for other populations, the study represents the first large-scale randomized, prospective, placebo-controlled study showing the benefits of dietary supplementation with antioxidant vitamins and minerals.
In another study, women who consumed high amounts of antioxidant-containing foods had a 33 percent greater improvement in overall health than women who ate few antioxidant-containing foods. Individual foods most closely associated with the health benefits among the subjects included carrots, spinach and other greens. The data suggest that people may enhance their health from increased consumption of fruits and vegetables.
